Rugby: Basic Rules

Rugby is a contact sport where two teams of 15 players compete to score by advancing the ball into the opponent's territory and grounding it over the try line. The game uses an oval ball, with players running, passing, and kicking to outmaneuver their opponents.

Rugby Field:
A rugby field is rectangular, 100 meters long and 70 meters wide, with try lines at each end and goalposts on the try lines.

Basic Rules and Gameplay:

  • Scoring Points:
    • Try (5 points): Grounding the ball in the opponent’s in-goal area.
    • Conversion (2 points): A kick through the goalposts after a try.
    • Penalty Kick (3 points): Awarded for serious infringements.
  • Passing and Running: Ball can only be passed backward or laterally, running with the ball and avoiding tackles is key.
  • Tackling: Must be below the shoulders and without danger.
  • Rucks and Mauls: Contesting possession after a tackle.
  • Lineouts and Scrums: Restart play after the ball goes out or for infringements.

Types of Rugby:

  • Rugby Union: The most popular form, played with 15 players, governed by World Rugby, and featuring the Rugby World Cup.
  • Rugby League: Played with 13 players and different rules, with the Rugby League World Cup as its main event.
