Volleyball: Basic Rules

A volleyball court is a rectangular area, 18 meters long and 9 meters wide, divided by a net. The net is 2.43 meters high for men’s play and 2.24 meters for women’s play.

How to Play Volleyball:

  • Teams: Two teams, each with six players, compete.
  • Serve: The game starts with a serve from behind the back line over the net.
  • Receive: The receiving team tries to pass the ball cleanly to set up an attack.
  • Rally: Teams exchange hits, aiming to keep the ball in play and prevent it from touching the ground on their side.
  • Attack and Block: The attacking team hits the ball forcefully over the net, while the defending team attempts to block the attack.
  • Scoring: Points are scored when the ball lands in the opponent's court or they fail to return it. Games are typically played to 25 points in a best-of-five sets format.
  • Rotation: Players rotate clockwise after their team wins the serve.
