American Football: Basic Rules

The main goal in American football is to score by either advancing the ball into the opponent's end zone for a touchdown or kicking it through their goalposts for a field goal. Two teams of 11 players compete to outscore each other.

The Field:
Games are played on a 100-yard field with 10-yard end zones on each end. Yard lines and hash marks help with positioning.

Basic Rules and Gameplay:

  • Starting the Game: Begins with a kickoff, where one team kicks to the other, who tries to advance the ball.
  • Offensive Play: The offense aims to move the ball to score, featuring roles like quarterback, running back, and wide receiver.
  • Defensive Play: The defense works to stop the offense and regain control, with players such as defensive linemen and cornerbacks.
  • Downs and Yardage: The offense has four tries to gain at least 10 yards. If successful, they earn four more downs; failure results in a turnover.
  • Scoring: A touchdown earns 6 points, a field goal 3, and extra points follow touchdowns. The defense can also score through turnovers.
  • Time Management: Games are divided into four 15-minute quarters, with strategic clock management for scoring.
